When I joined the Master’s Honours in HSE Management in November 2025, I saw safety mainly as compliance: inspections, checklists, PPE and toolbox talks. I worked on construction sites in Zanzibar and knew what had to be done. I did not yet fully understand why systems succeed or fail. I learned to evaluate hazards, apply the hierarchy of controls and prioritise by severity and likelihood. The 15 Villas Construction Project case study taught me to assess practices against recognised standards and legislation, then build a strategy and business case from the gaps. I built a stronger HSE culture on my current company, through leadership engagement, worker consultation and better reporting. A career as a senior HSE professional who influences policy and mentors young safety officers. I began the course as someone who enforced safety rules. I finish it as someone who can design, manage and improve safety systems.
