“PERSONAL REFLECTION ON PROFFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION. The journey through the Masters Degree in occupational Health, safety and environmental management has been both intellectually enriching and personally transformative. At the beginning of the course, my understanding of safety and health was largely compliance oriented focused mainly on rules, procedures and incidence response. As the course progressed, my outlook evolved significantly. I developed a deeper appreciation of occupational health and safety as an integrated management discipline that combines technical knowledge, human behaviour, leadership, legislation and continuous improvement. Through course work and practical assessments and applied projects, I gained the ability to identify hazards, asses risks objectively and design control measures that are realistic, sustainable and aligned with organizational objectives. I also developed stronger analytical skills particularly in evaluating safety performance data, interpreting trends and linking safety outcomes to business continuity and productivity. The course has also enhanced my professional confidence, enabling me to engage constructively with management, regulators and workers on complex safety issues. Throughout the course, my knowledge and perspective towards Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental Management changed significantly. The course provided me with a deeper understanding of how leadership commitment, employee participation, communication, supervision, and risk perception influence the success or failure of safety systems within an organization. I learned that most workplace incidents are not caused only by unsafe conditions, but also by human behavior, poor decision-making, lack of communication, and failure to identify hazards before work begins

Actually, I learned a lot that I can’t describe in this short page, but one of the most striking subjects was about fires! I learned that: Smoke Inhalation (Asphyxiation): Inhalation of toxic smoke is responsible for about 77% to 80% of deaths in fires, being the main cause of fatality, surpassing burns. Before I studied at the KEN INSTITUTE, my vision was limited, and I thought like anyone in the neighborhood that when there is a fire, the people who died were burned. Now I have a deeper understanding and scientific knowledge and I can say that: in a fire, the smoke is composed of dangerous gases that quickly incapacitate the person. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning (CO): Carbon monoxide, odorless and colorless, is the biggest villain, as it binds to hemoglobin in the blood and prevents the oxygenation of organs, causing asphyxiation. Cyanide Poisoning: Common synthetic materials in homes release cyanide, which is highly toxic. Heat from Gases: Inhaling superheated air can cause severe internal burns to the airways, leading to respiratory failure. At KEN INSTITUTE is the right place to learn and grow professionally. With everything I have learned, I intend to contribute to the development of my country (Mozambique) in the prevention and mitigation of accidents, and in the training of new talents who can work in the HSE area.

Have started to use modules like Project management which am using when doing our annual maintenance.Communication and ethics are also vital at my workplace.

I have learnt a lot of skills in line with creating a safety culture within my organisation and how I can implement the Risk based safety management system to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.I will implement these skills and also have trainings both for the management and the OSH committee to ensure they understand the benefits of having a proactive system of managing safety and also the impact of the lead and lag indicators on the overall safety of the organisation

I learned a lot regarding environmental and sustainability. How to protect environment and what are the conditions to take steps on environmental protection to prevent from pollution. Maintaining sustainability to protect eco system etc.

When I started the Ken course, I had basic knowledge and limited confidence in applying the concepts. By the end of the program, I learned how to think practically, follow structured processes, and communicate professionally in real work scenarios. I improved my understanding of HSE/Risk assessment, safety documentation, and how to design preventive strategies rather than only reacting after incidents. What I will build next is a stronger safety culture in my organization. I plan to apply hazard identification and risk assessment methods more consistently, improve safety training and toolbox talks, and strengthen emergency preparedness through mock drills. I also want to contribute by documenting SOPs/checklists, tracking near misses, and ensuring corrective actions are followed through to completion.

I gained theoretical knowledge. I learned how to operate and maintain mechanical systems, use engineering tools correctly, and follow safety standards in a workshop and industrial environment. My understanding of key subjects such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, and maintenance practices improved significantly. I also developed skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and communication, which are essential in the engineering field.

First time I heard about Ken Institute I was in doubt that it is possible to attend a professional course online, but my colleague who had done a course with Ken Institute made me feel more confident and I decided to proceed with the enrolment process with Ken.
