SAMPA CHOKOLO

Safety Superintendent, Mopani Copper Mines Plc, ZAMBIA
Through the knowledge and skills acquired, I have learned that safety culture, whether positive or negative, has a significant influence on an organisationโ€™s productivity, employee engagement, and overall performance. A strong positive safety culture promotes safe behaviours, accountability, effective communication, and continuous improvement, while a negative safety culture can contribute to unsafe practices, incidents, low morale, and reduced productivity. I have also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of psychological safety in the workplace, where employees are able to openly express their views, raise safety concerns, report hazards, and challenge unsafe practices without fear of intimidation, victimisation, or retaliation. Creating such an environment is essential for encouraging employee participation and ensuring that valuable safety information reaches management. From a practical occupational health perspective, I have strengthened my understanding of the management of radiation materials and the importance of monitoring occupational health stressors. These include personal noise exposure, noxious gases such as SOโ‚‚, illumination levels, thermal conditions and heat stress, as well as ensuring that occupational exposures remain within applicable Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs). Effective monitoring and control of these hazards are critical to protecting employees from both acute and long-term occupational health effects. With the knowledge and competencies acquired, I will contribute to making the HSE Department more proactive, prevention-focused, and data-driven. I intend to support the implementation of effective programmes and initiatives that promote Zero Harm, psychological safety, employee participation, continual improvement, and long-term organisational sustainability.
