Jameson Mavurawa

SHEQ Officer, Pickstone Mine, Zimbabwe
Completing my studies for the Masterโ€™s in Safety, Health and Environment Management with Ken Institute has been a significant milestone in my personal and professional development. At the beginning of the course, I approached safety, health and environmental management primarily from an operational and compliance perspective, focusing on hazard identification, risk assessment, incident prevention and adherence to organisational procedures. Through the course, my understanding has broadened, enabling me to appreciate SHE management as a strategic leadership function that contributes to organisational sustainability, employee wellbeing, environmental protection and overall business performance. One of the most important transformations I have experienced is a change in mindset. I now recognise that effective safety management goes beyond preventing accidents; it requires developing a positive safety culture, influencing behaviour, strengthening leadership accountability and integrating SHE considerations into every organisational decision. The course has also improved my critical thinking, analytical, research and problem-solving skills. I have become more conscious of the importance of evidence-based decision-making, continuous improvement, stakeholder engagement and evaluating the effectiveness of safety interventions rather than merely implementing them. Furthermore, I have developed a stronger appreciation of environmental stewardship, legal compliance and the relationship between employee wellbeing, productivity and sustainable development. Professionally, I intend to apply the knowledge and skills gained by adopting a more proactive and strategic approach to SHE management in my workplace. I will strengthen risk management systems, improve incident investigation and root-cause analysis, and promote the use of safety performance indicators to identify trends and prevent recurrence. I also plan to encourage greater employee and contractor participation, strengthen supervisory accountability and engage management in integrating SHE objectives into operational planning and production targets. Through regular workplace inspections, audits, training, safety engagements and performance reviews, I aim to promote a culture in which every individual takes responsibility for safety and environmental protection. I will also continue developing my competencies in leadership, communication, data analysis, legal compliance and integrated management systems. On a personal level, I intend to maintain a culture of lifelong learning, discipline, integrity and self-reflection. Completing this course has reminded me that professional growth requires humility, openness to new ideas and a willingness to learn from both successes and failures. I will improve my time management, strengthen my communication and interpersonal skills, and seek opportunities to mentor others and share knowledge. I also aim to maintain a healthier balance between professional responsibilities, personal development and family commitments. In conclusion, completing the Masterโ€™s in Safety, Health and Environment Management with Ken Institute represents not merely the completion of an academic programme, but the beginning of a new phase of professional growth. I emerge with a broader perspective, a stronger commitment to continuous improvement and a clearer understanding of my responsibility as a SHE practitioner and leader. My goal is to translate the knowledge gained into measurable improvements in workplace safety, environmental performance and organisational culture while continuing to grow as an ethical, competent and influential professional.
