When I started this course, my understanding of HSE was mainly about workplace hazards being identified and PPE worn, safety procedures followed and accidents prevented at work. Throughout the Diploma in HSE I have learned more about occupational health and safety management systems, hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation, emergency preparedness, environmental management, legal compliance and continuous improvement. I have also learned about leadership commitment, employee participation, communication, safety culture and proactive risk management. HSE is not just about following rules and reacting to incidents; itโs preventing incidents from happening in the first place by identifying risks, putting controls in place and monitoring workplace performance continuously. The course has sharpened my skills in risk assessments, safe work procedures, incident investigation, leading and lagging indicators monitoring and practical improvements in the workplace.
I want to develop a safety culture where every employee is responsible for their own safety and the safety of others. I will use what I learn to strengthen HSE systems; improve risk management practices; encourage proactive hazard reporting; leadership development and legislation compliance (local, national and international). I want to help create safer, healthier and more environmentally responsible workplaces (mining, engineering and mechanical maintenance industries). In the end this qualification changed my mindset from being a person who does safety procedures to becoming a professional who can identify risks, influence positive behaviour and contribute to HSE improvement continuously.
