When I started the Masters in Health, Safety and Environmental Management, I viewed HSE as a compliance checklist — rules to follow to avoid fines. By the end, my perspective completely shifted. I now understand HSE as a core business function that protects people, safeguards the environment, and drives operational excellence.
Academically, I gained advanced knowledge in risk assessment methodologies like HAZOP , incident investigation using Root Cause Analysis, and international standards including ISO 45001 and ISO 14001. I learned to interpret Mozambican HSE legislation and align it with global best practices.
Beyond technical skills, the program transformed my leadership approach. I learned how to build a proactive safety culture, influence behavior at all levels, and use data to predict and prevent incidents before they happen. I moved from “managing safety” to “leading people safely.”
