Michael Phiri

Mechanical Forman, Zambia railways limited company, Zambia
The journey from the beginning to the completion of my Diploma in Mechanical Engineering has been a significant transformation in both my professional and technical development. When I started this program, my understanding of mechanical engineering concepts was mainly based on practical exposure and routine operational experience. However, through this learning process, I have developed a much deeper and more structured understanding of engineering principles, industrial systems, and maintenance strategies that are essential in modern engineering practice. Throughout the courseI have gained comprehensive knowledge in key areas such as thermodynamics, strength of materials, machine design, fluid mechanics, engineering mathematics, manufacturing processes, maintenance engineering, and diesel-electric power systems. These subjects have broadened my technical capacity and enhanced my ability to understand the design, operation, performance, and maintenance requirements of complex mechanical systems. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is the importance of integrating theoretical engineering principles with practical industrial applications. This has strengthened my ability to approach engineering challenges systematically by applying critical analysis, fault diagnosis, problem-solving techniques, and evidence-based decision-making. I now have a better understanding of how engineering systems function as integrated units and how failures in one section can affect the overall performance of equipment. The practical assignments, technical reports, and project work completed during this program have significantly improved my professional competencies. Through these activities, I have developed skills in equipment inspection, condition monitoring, overhaul planning, preventive and corrective maintenance, fuel consumption analysis, performance evaluation, and technical documentation. My recent locomotive overhaul project, for example, gave me an opportunity to apply engineering knowledge in assessing the impact of maintenance interventions on fuel efficiency and operational performance, which deepened my understanding of mechanical reliability and optimization. This learning journey has also enhanced my ability to work with engineering standards, interpret technical data, prepare structured reports, and communicate engineering findings professionally. These are essential competencies for any engineer operating in industrial and operational environments where safety, efficiency, and reliability are critical. Looking ahead, I intend to build upon the knowledge and skills acquired by applying them effectively within my organization. My goal is to contribute towards improving equipment reliability, strengthening maintenance systems, reducing downtime, optimizing fuel efficiency, and increasing operational productivity. By implementing improved engineering practices and maintenance strategies, I believe I can support the organization’s continuous improvement objectives and contribute to sustainable growth. In conclusion, this diploma has not only expanded my technical knowledge but has also transformed my mindset as an engineer. It has equipped me with the confidence, discipline, and professional competence required to face complex engineering challenges and provide practical solutions that add value to both my organization and the engineering profession as a whole.
