I, Muyombi Maloba Jean At the beginning of this course, I had practical experience in occupational health and safety, Throughout the programme, I developed a broader and more strategic understanding of Health and Safety Management Systems (HSMS).
Module 1: Implementing Health and Safety Management, I learned how to establish, implement, and continually improve an effective health and safety management system aligned with recognized standards.
Module 2: Monitoring Health and Safety Management Systems, I gained the ability to measure performance using inspections, audits, incident investigations, performance indicators, and management reviews to ensure continual improvement.
Module 3: Factors Influencing Health and Safety Management Systems enhanced my understanding of the internal and external factors that affect safety performance, including leadership, organizational culture, legal requirements, human behaviour, communication, and stakeholder engagement.
Module 4: Occupational Health and Safety Hazards and Controls strengthened my competence in identifying workplace hazards, assessing risks, and selecting appropriate control measures using the hierarchy of controls to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses.
Key areas of my learning included:
• How to implement and maintain an effective Health and Safety Management System.
• How to monitor and evaluate health and safety performance.
• How organizational, legal, and human factors influence safety outcomes.
• How to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement effective control measures.
• The importance of continual improvement, leadership, worker participation, and proactive risk management.
The program also strengthened my analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills, enabling me to approach HSE challenges from both operational and strategic perspectives.
The most significant transformation was my shift from viewing safety as a procedural requirement to understanding it as a core organizational value. I learned that effective HSE management requires proactive leadership, continuous improvement, employee engagement, and a commitment to creating safe and sustainable workplaces.
I became more confident in:
• Identifying and mitigating workplace risks.
• Leading safety initiatives and promoting a positive safety culture.
• Making informed decisions based on HSE data and performance indicators.
• Communicating safety expectations across diverse teams.
• Integrating environmental stewardship into business operations.
What i will build:
I will apply the knowledge and skills gained to build a stronger safety culture within my organization by:
• Promoting proactive hazard identification and risk management.
• Strengthening compliance with legal and ISO 45001 requirements.
• Improving safety performance through effective monitoring and data-driven decision-making.
• Encouraging leadership commitment and employee participation in health and safety.
• Developing a workplace where continuous improvement reduces incidents and protects the health and wellbeing of all employees.
Conclusion:
Overall, this course has transformed my perspective from simply managing safety activities to strategically leading and continuously improving occupational health and safety management systems.
