1st PLACE MEASURES ON  FIRE INCIDENTS AT WORKPLACE

The following are 3 crucial steps that must be taken at 1st place to minimize injuries and save lives at the workplace in a fire incident.

  1. Raise the alarm
  2. Evacuation
  3. Assess to Assembly point
  • RAISE THE ALARM

Regardless of the amount of fire outbreaks, immediately alert every person within the workplace by triggering the closest fire alarm, yelling, or as much as possible.

Call Fire Rescue Services by informing the exact fire location and other helpful information such as the type and extent of the fire. If the fire is frivolous and controllable try to put it out by using a suitable fire extinguisher.

  • EVACUATION

In a fire incident, the 1st call to action is everyone should forward to the nearest fire exit and head to the designated assembly point.

Evacuation should not be in the hustle. It is not as easy as just walking out as a daily practice. It should be quick but smooth. Fire Officers should make sure that the escape route is not blocked by smoke or fire. Also, check thoroughly that everyone is out safely. Cease all the machinery and working procedures instantly.

Avoid the use of lifts or elevators as there are possibilities of being trapped inside, if it stop working, doors might open on fire-affected floors and persons inside will be exposed to flames, heat, or choking with smoke. Use the stairs. If stairs are compromised by smoke, get down and crawl. This will reduce the inhalation of smoke. Check the door if it is hot, don’t open it. There might be fire on the other side. The last person coming out of the door should try to close it (do not lock it) to keep the fire from spreading.

ASSESS TO ASSEMBLY POINT

The most crucial step in the fire evacuation plan is to fix a safe assembly point. The location of the Assembly Point must be easily accessible. All the routes are safe and with the signs and instructions to get there. Assembly Point should be provided with a First Aid box to treat minor injuries and all emergency numbers. In case of fire spreads up to Assembly Point, alternate gathering points should be predetermined.

After the evacuation, everybody should meet at Assembly Point or alternate preconcerted areas.

Nobody should be allowed to re-enter the fire incident area until instructed to do so by the fire officer. After gathering, a responsible person should carry a headcount (nominal roll call) to ensure that everyone evacuated from the fire site. Report immediately to the Fire Personnel and Safety Officers if anyone is missing.

“Fire is the most useful friend as well as the most catastrophic enemy of mankind.”

Everyone should be well aware of fire safety procedures and should be aware of what to do if a fire incident happens. “Prevention is better than Cure”. Small or huge, every place has its action plans for fire Incidents. Everyone must be well acquainted with it. Frequent drills of the Safety Process will help to save numerous casualties and losses.
