At the beginning of my **Graduate Honours in Mechanical Engineering**, I had a strong practical background in mechanical work, maintenance, fabrication, piping and industrial operations. Introduction Commencing the Meng (Hons) in Energy at Ken Institute in 2025 marked a critical transition in my carrier. At first, I thought I was just adding qualification. I was wrong. It changed how I see the career. With 18 years’ experience as a certified Heavy Plant Artisan and current Water Process Controller at Debswana, I entered the program with strong practical skills but limited exposure to formal engineering research and systems thinking. Transformation Experienced The initial phase of the course challenged my technician mindset. Course work in the thermodynamics, energy modelling, and research methodology required a shift from empirical repair to analytical design. This transition was demonstrated in my Final Year Project: a dual-axis solar tracker. Previously, I would have constructed the system based on my workshop experience. The programme required me to integrate INA219 data acquisition, quantify a 25.4% net energy gain, and design a four-layer circuit protection scheme. This demonstrated a transition from practical execution to evidence-based engineering. Planned work improvements: Professional work 1.Predictive Maintenance: At the Orapa Water Treatment plant , I intend to implement a routine logging of pump current, pressure, and run-hours via SCADA to enable condition-based maintenance and reduce downtime. 2.Energy Optimization: I will apply energy audit principles to all process equipment, with a key target is to propose one-solar assisted pumping or tracking initiative to Debswana’s Energy management team within the next 12months, aligning with the mine decarbonization goals. 3.Technical Communication: I will develop proficiency in structured technical reporting and APA referencing to improve internal knowledge transfer at Debswana. Planned Improvements: Personal and Performance 1. Structured Learning: Allocate 8 hours weakly for advanced study in MATALAB, Python, and renewable energy design. 2. Growth Mindset: Approach academic challenges as opportunities for development to reduce reliance on trial-and -error methods. 3. Knowledge Transfer: mentor two or more junior process controllers in instrumentation and data interpretation to support Debswana’s skills pipeline. Conclusion. The Ken Institute Meng programme has catalysed my evolution from artisan to engineer. My plan is to operationalize this transformation through data-driven practices, continuous learning, and leadership in energy efficiency at Debswana

From Course Beginning to End: A Reflection on My HSE Transformation Where I Started When I began this Master’s program in Health, Safety and Environment Management, my understanding of HSE was fundamentally operational. I saw it as a set of rules, checklists, and compliance requirements, protective equipment, hazard signs, incident reporting forms, and regulatory paperwork. Safety was something “done to” workers, enforced from above, and measured in lagging indicators like accident rates and lost-time injuries. The Shift: What I’ve Learned The most profound transformation has been a change in perspective. I’ve moved from seeing HSE as a compliance burden to understanding it as a strategic business function and a moral commitment. From reactive to proactive. Early on, I thought a good HSE professional was someone who responded well to incidents. Now I understand the goal is to predict, prevent, and systematically eliminate risk at the design stage, through hazard identification, risk assessment, and hierarchy of controls, not through post-incident firefighting. From rules to culture. I’ve learned that no procedure survives contact with an unsafe culture. The technical skills, process safety, toxicology, occupational hygiene, environmental impact assessment, emergency response planning, are essential but insufficient. Real safety comes from leadership commitment, employee engagement, psychological safety, and a “just culture” where people report near-misses without fear. From silos to systems. I now see HSE as deeply interconnected: human factors, engineering controls, environmental stewardship, and organizational behavior all work together. A spill is never just an environmental issue; it’s a systems failure. Sustainability is no longer an afterthought but a core pillar, aligned with ESG and corporate responsibility. From memory to mastery. The technical depth I’ve gained is substantial, from risk matrices and bowtie analysis to ISO 45001, 14001, and the legal frameworks that govern workplaces. I’ve learned how to conduct effective audits, investigate incidents using root-cause methodologies, and apply data to drive decisions. What I’ll Build Carrying this transformation forward, here’s what I intend to construct: A culture-first safety framework. I’ll build and implement management systems that treat people as the solution, not the problem, embedding safety leadership at every level so that prevention becomes instinctive rather than imposed. Proactive risk intelligence. I’ll develop data-driven early-warning systems that analyze leading indicators, turning workplace data into actionable insight before harm occurs. A resilient, sustainable operation. I’ll design HSE programs that integrate environmental stewardship with operational excellence, so that protection of people and planet becomes an engine of performance rather than a cost. A mentor’s legacy. Most importantly, I’ll build people, training and empowering the next generation of safety leaders, because the ultimate measure of this education is not what I know, but what I pass on and the lives I help protect.

As an engineering professional with Zambia Railways Ltd., I sought to strengthen my technical expertise, broaden my engineering knowledge, and enhance my ability to contribute effectively to the railway industry. Throughout the program, I acquired advanced knowledge in mechanical engineering principles, engineering mathematics, materials science, maintenance engineering, engineering analysis, and project-based problem solving. The curriculum combined theoretical concepts with practical engineering applications, enabling me to develop a more analytical and systematic approach to solving complex engineering challenges. One of the most valuable aspects of the program was the opportunity to apply the knowledge directly to my workplace. During my studies, I successfully completed a comprehensive engineering project on the refurbishment of a GM diesel-electric locomotive at Zambia Railways Ltd. This project allowed me to integrate classroom knowledge with practical industrial experience, strengthening my technical competence in maintenance planning, equipment refurbishment, reliability improvement, and engineering documentation. The program has significantly enhanced my confidence in engineering decision-making, technical reporting, project execution, and leadership within multidisciplinary teams. When I began my Master’s in Health, Safety and Environment, I saw myself as a School Principal with 8 years of leadership experience. I believed my job was about academics, discipline, and administration. By the end of the programme, I no longer see safety as just compliance or avoiding accidents, rather, I see it as a culture, a mindset, and a responsibility that touches every part of professional and personal life. The course transformed how I think, lead, and make decisions. At the beginning, my approach to safety was reactive. If a learner was injured, we treated them, filled a report, and moved on. Fire drills were done because the Ministry required them. The HSE Masters taught me that true safety is proactive, not reactive. I learned the concepts of hazard identification, risk assessment, and the hierarchy of controls. I now understand that every incident has root causes that can be prevented before harm occurs. This changed my mindset from waiting for problems to anticipating and eliminating risks. In my professional work, I now walk into any environment and immediately scan for unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and system failures. In personal life, I apply the same thinking at home: checking electrical wiring, storing chemicals safely, and teaching my children about hazard awareness. The course gave me technical skills I did not have as a Principal. I moved from managing people to understanding systems. I learned how to conduct proper risk assessments using risk matrices, how to investigate incidents using root cause analysis tools like the 5 Whys, and how to develop HSE policies aligned to ISO 45001 and the OHS Act 85 of1993. I also gained competence in emergency preparedness, occupational health monitoring, and compliance auditing. Before, I delegated safety tasks. Now, I can lead toolbox talks, design evacuation plans, and audit contractors myself. To upgrade further, I am committing to NEBOSH IGC and First Aid Level 3 so my technical skills match my leadership experience. The Masters reshaped how I lead teams. I used to enforce rules through discipline. Now I understand safety leadership is about influencing culture. I learned that performance in SHEQ is measured by leading indicators, not just lagging indicators. Instead of only counting accidents, I now track training attendance, hazard reports, and near-miss reporting. This course taught me that people do not resist safety; they resist being told what to do. So I now focus on communication, consultation, and involving staff in decision-making. In my professional work, I will implement monthly safety meetings, near-miss reporting boxes, and recognition for safe behavior. In personal life, I am applying performance discipline to my own health: regular medical checks, stress management, and setting an example for my family. The biggest transformation was personal. HSE is no longer “work”, it is how I live. The course modules on occupational health made me more conscious about my health as I had to quit smoking and alcohol consumption. I now understand the link between environment, exposure, and health outcomes. This pushed me to improve home hygiene, ventilation, and dust control. The module on work-life balance and stress management also forced me to reflect on burnout as a Principal. I now schedule rest, exercise, and mental health check-ins for myself, because a safety leader must first be safe and well. My HSE Masters journey transformed me from an administrator to a safety leader. I gained a proactive mindset, technical skills in risk and compliance, and a leadership style that builds culture instead of fear. The key improvement I will implement is embedding the Plan-Do-Check- Act cycle in everything I do: plan safety before tasks, do it correctly, check results, and act to improve. Both at work and at home, I now ask one question daily: “What risk did I eliminate today?” This mindset, combined with upgraded skills, will define my performance in any SHEQ role I take on next.

I have learned a lot on relevant topics to my cement industry such as respirable hazards from dust, toxicity and LD50 for the various chemicals emanating from the industry. Fires and electrical safety was vital since we heavily use 33kv power lines, and have internal solar unit of 15KW-hour. Physical hazards such as noise improved my understanding and mitigation measures: the ergonomics topic was relevant since we we have plenty of office setup, including a control room operated 24 hours and 12 hours shift sitting. The emergency systems and fire fighting equipment was very relevant bearing in mind the high risk of fire from electrical and fules (both heavy fuel oil & coal).

“Student: Chongo Nsama | Enrollment No: KEN/08-2025/MEEG/1152 Where I Started I arrived at this programme with twenty years of mining engineering experience across six countries and a specific problem I could not yet solve rigorously: every morning at Bomboré Gold Mine, I watched four diesel generators consume millions of dollars of fuel beneath one of the best solar skies on the planet. I knew solar was the answer. I did not yet know how to prove it. What I Learned Module 1 — Renewable Energy Systems — gave me the engineering language for what I had been observing intuitively. Solar irradiance became a quantifiable resource. Grid stability in isolated microgrids became a design problem with known solutions. I stopped seeing the Burkina Faso sun as weather and started seeing it as data. Module 2 — Energy Storage and Conversion — taught me why battery chemistry matters at 42 degrees Celsius. It is the reason I specified Lithium Iron Phosphate over NMC for the Bomboré BESS, and it is the difference between a system that works safely in the Sahel and one that does not. This module also opened my eyes to the waste heat our HFO generators reject to atmosphere daily — a recovery opportunity I had never quantified before. Module 3 — Sustainable Design and Green Engineering — changed how I read a fuel bill. The 12,221 tonnes of CO2 Bomboré emits annually from power generation is not just an environmental figure. Under the Gold Standard carbon market it is a financial liability and a revenue opportunity simultaneously. I learned to speak that language, and it made my CAPEX proposal significantly more compelling. Module 4 — Wind and Solar Energy Technologies — put the tools in my hands. HOMER Pro optimisation software, PV system sizing methodology, BESS dispatch logic, DC/AC ratio design for tropical high-irradiance sites. This is where the Bomboré Solar Hybrid feasibility study was born. What I Will Build Before the end of 2026, I will present the Bomboré Solar PV Hybrid Power System — a USD 14.95 million, 10 MWp solar plus 5 MWh BESS proposal with an IRR of 18.4% — to the Orezone executive team as a live capital investment submission. That proposal is the direct product of this programme. Beyond Bomboré, I will publish this work, present it at industry forums, and use it to mentor engineering colleagues across West Africa who face the same diesel dependency problem. The tools this programme gave me are not mine to keep. They are mine to multiply.”

The journey through the Masters Degree in occupational Health, safety and environmental management has been both intellectually enriching and personally transformative. At the beginning of the course, my understanding of safety and health was largely compliance oriented focused mainly on rules, procedures and incidence response. As the course progressed, my outlook evolved significantly. I developed a deeper appreciation of occupational health and safety as an integrated management discipline that combines technical knowledge, human behaviour, leadership, legislation and continuous improvement. Through course work and practical assessments and applied projects, I gained the ability to identify hazards, asses risks objectively and design control measures that are realistic, sustainable and aligned with organizational objectives.
